2017 Healthy Food Trends!

If you are like me, you have probably overindulged a little in the past few weeks. But 2017 is here and we are ready to start it out right! After eating your lucky new year foods today (shout out to my mammaw for the best black eyed peas and cabbage in town!), let’s start thinking about where to take our plate in 2017!

Here are some of my favorite food trends coming:

PURPLE FOODS: From purple cauliflower to elderberries, purple foods are expected to begin popping up more and more! Not just because of the beautiful color, but because of their nutrient density and antioxidant richness!

SEAWEED is the new kale!- It is low calorie and high in nutrients and full of flavor. Don’t be afraid, grab some seaweed chips and see what it is all about!

HOME MEAL KITS: This is something we have seen come about over the past few years, but 2017 is going to be the year of delivery meal kits! We have never tried one, but i have it on my to do list for this year!

REDUCED FOOD WASTE: 40% of our food gets thrown away in America. We are finally realizing the magnitude of this problem and getting creative! in 2017 there will be more use of food byproducts such as stalks and juices and we will see more resourceful use of the “ugly” produce that usually goes in the trash.

SORGHUM: Move over quinoa, there’s a new grain in town! Sorghum is gluten free, a great source of fiber and protein, and can even be popped like popcorn! Expect to start seeing more products containing sorghum this year!

PROBIOTICS: By now you should know that I LOVE some probiotics, so this is probably my favorite trend of 2017. We will begin to see probiotic fortified products popping up everywhere- probiotic water, ice cream, even chips!

Please please remember that just because you find a product with any of the above mentioned, DOESN’T AUTOMATICALLY MAKE IT HEALTHY. Purple sweet potato casserole and probiotic ice cream will still have sugar, fat, and calories y’all! In 2017, aim to be smarter about your choices and to stay OFF the “diet” bandwagons by eating balanced and healthy each day.
