Water + Creativity = Staying Hydrated this Summer

Summer is here and the months to come bring us long nights, farmer’s markets, abundant sunshine, and lots of wonderful heat! However, with all of this summer goodness, we need to make sure we are staying hydrated before, during, and after barre. Dehydration, whether subtle or extreme, impacts our performance, endurance, and stamina in every task. Maintaining adequate hydration is so crucial to safe and healthy summers for us all. We hope you have fun incorporating these three ideas into your routine!

Water plays nice with citrus and cucumber…
Try adding sliced citrus fruits (lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruit…be creative!), strawberries or fresh cucumber to your water to sip on throughout the day. If you are thirsty before you drink, then you probably have not hydrated enough for your body. Fun add-ins make water taste more delicious, and also give you extra immune boosters like vitamin C naturally to support your system. Make them ahead of time and grab them on the go, too. The beautiful glass water bottles at athenafit make this suggestion extra lovely (just saying…).

Find water hiding in foods…
Water is abundant in fresh fruits and vegetables. Watermelon shines in the Mississippi summertime. It’s cousins, cantaloupe and honeydew, are also plentiful in farmer’s markets. These delicious fruits are packed full of water and essential nutrients to give you healthy energy and also hydrate you for a solid barre workout. Try prepping these colorful melons on Sundays and then storing 1 - 2 cupfuls in easy to pack containers for any busy day. Filling up on melon will keep you from reaching for less healthy or dehydrating snacks.

Have a fresh fruit and greens smoothie with your morning joe…
One fun and healthy way to start your morning is to have a homemade smoothie when you first wake up. All night while we sleep, our bodies are using water for our cells. As soon as we start the day, we need to replenish these fluids. The night before, make a simple smoothie with a handful of spinach, frozen fruit, fresh banana, splash of coconut milk, and water. Then just keep it in the fridge so that your morning routine is quick and tasty, and you can instantly hydrate. As essential as a good cup of black coffee remains to my morning routine, it shares morning time with a smoothie so that a caffeine boost doesn’t dehydrate our bodies.

Enjoy water in lovely glassware…
If you have trouble drinking water at home, whether early in your morning, or later in the evening after dinner, select a glass that is elegant.  A great place to purchase these little crystal treasures are at second-hand stores. Ice cube come in all shapes and sizes, so purchase some fun little trays and keep various unique options of ice on hand. If you can't find them at your local store, order on-line.

Soak up these southern summer months and enjoy them. Just remember to hydrate every day so that you have the energy to work hard at the barre, and play until the sun finally goes down every night.
